In The Garlic, taken from the Spanish idiom en el ajo meaning 'in the know', is a quirky vibrant book packed with helpful information, insights, anecdotes, stories, jokes and fascinating nuggets that illuminate the mysteries of everyday life in Spain. From saints' days to sausages, bureaucrats to bollycaos, languages to lotteries, Galicia to the Guardia Civil and telephone companies to Pérez the tooth mouse, it is an essential companion for anyone living in or moving to Spain - or, indeed, for anyone with a simple passion for the country and its people.

Essential items revealed include

  • The one law of Spanish bureaucracy you need to know.

  • The one person you can't do without.

  • The one time of day you should never do business.

Mr Garlic takes the reader, in leisurely fashion, through the illustrated cross-referenced entries boldly set out in user-friendly format so that by the end of the book the following assessment by "The Costa del Sol News" can be fully appreciated:

"In The Garlic takes your understanding of Spain to a new level. Thoroughly recommended."

Next time someone asks about the hidden connection between sausages and thieves or, more intriguingly, relates the worst thing that can be done with a communion wafer, the no.1 place to source or check the information is clear!

About the author

Valerie Collins & Theresa O'Shea

Born in Manchester but for many years based in Barcelona, Valerie Collins has worked extensively as a translator and writer. Seduced by Spain as a tenenager on holiday, she later married Enric, a Catalan lawyer, raised a family and has become an expert on negotiating Spanish/Catalan redtape as is clearly evidenced in the book for Santana illustrated above.

Equally formidable linguistic skills are shown by co-writer Theresa O'Shea, a freelance journalist and writer, who lives in a small village in the Axarquía. Also originally from the UK, she travelled in Asia and the USA before taking up a teaching post in Spain, which has since become her home following her marriage to Andalusian, Francisco.
